American Idol executives have officially confirmed that Carrie Underwood will return as a judge for the upcoming season 24, putting an end to speculation about her future on the show.
After a debut season that drew both praise and criticism, sources say the powers that be never wavered in their support for the country superstar.
“After all the bumps this season, the people that matter in the decision-making really love Carrie,” an insider told The U.S. Sun. “They defended any setbacks she endured and were eager to have her back. Now, it’s official: Carrie is returning to the judges’ table.”
The insider explained that while season 23 challenged Carrie, being out of her comfort zone and away from her family in Los Angeles, her talent, insight, and relatability made her an invaluable addition to the panel.
Compared with other potential judges, her salary remains relatively modest, making her return a smart business move for ABC and Fremantle, the show’s production company.
Fans can also look forward to seeing the judges’ playful side. In a recent clip released exclusively with PEOPLE on December 31, Carrie joined Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan at “American Idol University,” a nostalgic tour of the show’s history led by longtime host Ryan Seacrest.
Donning matching letterman jackets, the judges explored framed photos of Idol alumni, showcased awards and platinum records, and shared lighthearted moments, including a wax figure of Clay Aiken that startled the panel.
“Look at all of these superstars that have graduated from Idol-U,” Carrie said, reflecting on the show’s legacy, while Richie added, “A dream come true in every direction.” The judges also previewed the upcoming season, with Carrie declaring, “American Idol class of 2026 is in session,” signaling a fresh start for the show’s new contestants.

Michaels Wolflick, who has been onboard with Idol for 22 years, sounds thrilled with Underwood’s performance at the judges’ table with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. “I think she is so tapped into the experience. She got her feet wet last year, but what I do love about her is she is invested. She is in it and cares so much about all the finalists who come through the door…I’m so proud. It’s awesome because I was on the show when she was. We’re around the same age. When we were on the show together back then, we were all very close as producers. Now to have her come full circle back is pretty epic.”
Season 24 premieres on January 26 on ABC, with episodes available the following day on Hulu, promising fans another season guided by Carrie’s experience, warmth, and undeniable star power.
