Rommel Quemenales is an 11-year-old boy from Quezon City in the Philippines. When he was very young, his parents separated, and he could no longer live with them. He has an older sister, but she lives far away in another city. Rommel didn’t have money to visit her, so he had to stay on the streets after finishing second grade.
Even though life was hard and he had to leave school, Rommel always dreamed of going back to learn more. He never gave up hope.
One day, a kind woman named Maria Kabs saw Rommel walking with his dog on the streets. She was so touched by their friendship that she took pictures and shared them on Facebook. In 2018, a photo of Rommel sleeping while hugging his dog became very popular online. People all over the world saw it and felt their hearts warm.
Rommel’s dog, named Badgi, was a stray he found on the streets. They became best friends. Rommel says Badgi made him feel safe and happy during tough times. They helped each other survive. When Rommel got food, he shared it with Badgi. In return, Badgi protected Rommel from other kids who might be unkind.
Every night, Rommel and Badgi slept close together, resting after a long day. Their friendship gave them both hope and made their days brighter, even when things were difficult.
Badgi didn’t care if Rommel had a home or not—he loved him anyway. Rommel felt stronger with Badgi by his side and wasn’t afraid of being alone or bullied.
Thanks to Maria’s photos and the kindness of many people who saw them, Rommel’s life got better. He was able to go back to school and start building a brighter future with his loyal dog friend still by his side.
Even after all he’s been through, Rommel is full of love and dreams. He’s so happy to have Badgi, his best friend, and their special bond makes every day a little easier.
