Colleen Paige, a person who knows a lot about animals and loves helping them, started National Pet Day in 2006. She wanted everyone to know that too many pets are waiting in shelters for homes and to encourage people to adopt them.
National Pet Day happens every year on April 11. It’s a special day to show love for your own pets and to help pets who don’t have families yet. Shelters are full of cats and dogs waiting for someone to take them home. Big dogs or ones that need extra care sometimes wait a long time.
There’s a sweet dog named Pepe at the Everett Animal Shelter who’s been waiting for over 75 days to find a family. He only has one eye, but he’s super strong and brave. Earlier this year, he got hurt when a car hit him. The shelter took him to a vet right away, and they had to take out his bad eye to save him. With lots of care, he got better from his cuts and bruises.
Pepe doesn’t let having one eye stop him. His friends at the shelter say he’s learning to get around just fine. He loves playing, cuddling, and being with people, even after everything he’s been through. Now, he’s ready to find a home where he’ll be loved forever.
This year, Pepe is our special helper for National Pet Day. We want to help lots of shelter pets like him get ready for adoption with care packages. Each package has healthy food, shots to keep them well, a fun toy, and a soft bed.
Please tell everyone about Pepe so he can find his perfect family soon! All the pets in shelters deserve love, just like the pets we have at home. You can help by giving a little money today to make sure shelter cats and dogs are ready to meet their new families.
