When he’s not playing football or practicing for a game, Brady loves spending time with his family, friends, girlfriend, and helping dogs in need.
A few years ago, Brady’s friend Ryan invited him to join a dog rescue mission with a group called K9 Advocates Manitoba. Since then, Brady has been working hard to save dogs. “K9 speaks for dogs who can’t speak for themselves,” Brady told a magazine. He helps rescue dogs from faraway places, brings them to safe homes, and uses his fame to raise money for K9 Advocates. Sometimes, he even travels to other countries to help animals.
In March 2021, K9 Advocates got a call about a dog hiding under a deck. This dog had porcupine quills stuck in his mouth and was hurt, maybe by a person. He was scared and didn’t trust anyone, which made rescuing him very hard.
Brady didn’t give up. He crawled under the deck to get close to the dog. He spoke in a gentle, calm voice to make the dog feel safe. The dog was frightened and wanted to run, so Brady’s team blocked parts of the deck to keep him from escaping.
The dog seemed like he wanted to trust Brady but was too scared because of his past. At one point, he lay down, looking tired and hopeless. But Brady kept talking softly and petting him, showing he cared.
After a while, the dog let Brady touch his cheek. Brady could tell the dog was starting to feel safe. Soon, Brady knew it was time to help the dog leave the deck. “I’ve got you, Buddy,” Brady said gently, over and over.
With patience, they got the dog, now named Buddy, into a carrier and took him to a vet. Buddy needed three surgeries to fix his injuries from the quills, but he was strong and got better.
Later, Buddy was sent to the Winnipeg Humane Society to find a new home. Six months after the rescue, Brady visited Buddy at his new home because he had been adopted. Buddy remembered Brady and was so happy to see him. He wagged his tail and showed how joyful he was in his new family.
Brady’s kindness made a big difference for Buddy, turning a scared, hurt dog into a happy pet with a loving home.
