A Heartwarming Friendship: Baby Elephant Jotto and Ostrich Pea

In the heart of Kenya, a rescue mission by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) unfolded, leading to an extraordinary friendship between a rescued baby elephant named Jotto and an unexpected companion—an ostrich named Pea.

Jotto, a one-month-old elephant, faced a difficult situation after tumbling into a well, separating him from his herd. The DSWT stepped in for a rescue mission, transporting him to a Kenyan elephant orphanage.

Little did they know, Jotto would soon form an inseparable bond with Pea, a compassionate ostrich residing at the sanctuary.

During the rescue mission for the baby elephant, the staff at the orphanage discovered Pea and her ostrich brother, Pod, who also needed assistance.

In an admirable display of compassion, both ostriches were brought back to the shelter alongside the rescued elephant.

While Pod successfully reintegrated into the wild, Pea chose to stay at the shelter, forming an unexpected but profound connection with the elephant herd.

Pea considers herself an integral part of the community at the Nairobi Nursery, showcasing a sense of belonging.

The bond between Jotto and Pea became apparent when they met, as they consistently snuggled and expressed affection for each other.

Pea, the caring ostrich, played a nurturing role in Jotto’s life, contributing to his healing and overall well-being.

The joy of the young elephant was evident each time he embraced these comforting moments with his feathered companion.

In a recent update, DSWT shared, “Orphaned ostrich Pea sees herself as an integral part of the elephant herd, and young Jotto is more than content to share cuddles with his feathered companion.

These heartwarming moments unfold at the Nairobi Nursery, where not only these two orphans but many others are provided with the chance to heal and, in due time, reintegrate into the wild.”
