Nico was a lonely dog who had a tough life. He roamed the cold streets all by himself, with no one to look after him. He was skinny, and his sad eyes showed how hungry and alone he felt, wishing someone would care.
One day, Nico sat quietly in front of a house, looking far away, hoping someone would notice him.
Then, Donna Lochmann, a kind person who helps animals at a shelter in Missouri, saw him. She felt sad right away when she noticed how thin Nico was, with his ribs sticking out.
Even though Nico was scared and hurting, his eyes got bright when Donna came near. He wagged his tail a little and walked toward her, keeping his head down but feeling a bit hopeful. It was like he knew she was there to help him.
Donna saw that Nico had a hurt paw, but what surprised her most was how fast he snuggled up to her for comfort. When she held him, Nico relaxed in her arms and rested his head on her leg. After so long, he finally felt someone being nice to him.
Donna gently put Nico in her car, and his tail kept wagging. He curled up on the seat, loving every bit of kindness she gave him. For the first time, Nico felt safe.
At the shelter, everyone welcomed Nico with big smiles. The people there loved how sweet he was and gave him lots of attention.
With all this care, Nico started to feel happy again. He knew he was with good people now.
The shelter is taking care of Nico, helping him get strong and healthy. Soon, when he’s ready, he’ll go to a foster home for a while, and then he’ll find a family to love him forever.
Nico’s sad days are gone. He’s on his way to a happy life, and he’s already making everyone around him smile.
