Queen guitarist Brian May has stirred emotions among fans with a heartfelt Instagram post paying tribute to his late bandmate and dear friend, Freddie Mercury. The post, shared on the eve of what would have been Mercury’s 78th birthday, reflects both nostalgia and deep affection for the legendary singer.
Remembering “Good Days”
May published a series of rare photographs, taken with his personal Stereo Realist 3D camera, showing Mercury standing on a hotel balcony in Munich with his arms triumphantly raised. Alongside the images, May wrote:
“Happy Birthday dear Freddie. PLEASE SWIPE folks. Here’s Freddie in 3D, courtesy of my Stereo Realist camera, greeting the world from his balcony in the Munich Hilton, Germany. I’m thinking 1979… good days. Bri.”
The candid glimpse of Mercury, paired with May’s words, evoked a wave of emotions from fans, many of whom responded with warm birthday wishes and personal reflections. Freddie’s Final Days
Mercury, who passed away in November 1991 at just 45 from complications related to AIDS, spent his final years in the comfort of his beloved Garden Lodge home in London. His close friend and assistant, Peter “Phoebe” Freestone, has often spoken about the sanctuary the house provided for Mercury during his most difficult times.
“Freddie’s Garden Lodge generally had a quiet atmosphere,” Freestone once recalled. “It was his home, so while he had quite a few wonderful parties for anything up to 200 people, it was a place he felt secure in and a place where he didn’t have to guard anything he said or did.”
According to Freestone, Mercury cherished simple moments in those final years: slipping into mismatched tracksuits, enjoying silence, or laughing heartily with friends. Despite his illness, he remained surrounded by people who brought him joy and laughter until the very end.
