Foo Fighters celebrates the 30th anniversary of their debut LP on July 4 with new song titled “Today’s song”

Just two days after surprising fans with a Minor Threat cover, Foo Fighters have dropped a new original track, “Today’s Song.” This release comes just before the 30th anniversary of the Dave Grohl-led band’s self-titled debut album, hitting on July 4th. It also marks the group’s first new music since 2023’s But Here We Are and the recent departure of drummer Josh Freese.limpse into Grohl’s Reflections

The initial 55 seconds of “Today’s Song” feature Grohl’s vocals layered over a simple, almost meditative organ melody. His lyrics seem to directly address the extramarital affair that led to the band’s 2024 tour being scrapped, with lines like: “I woke today screaming for change / I knew that I must / So here lies a shadow, ashes to ashes, dust into dust.” The track then builds into the familiar, mid-tempo, heavy guitar sound Foo Fighters are known for, as Grohl’s voice intensifies with questions like, “we all drown in the middle / which side are you on?”

Notably, Grohl also handles drum duties on the track, a role he hadn’t frequently taken on within Foo Fighters for many years prior to But Here We Are.

A Message of Resilience and Gratitude

On the band’s recently launched Substack page, which features rare images and career recollections, Grohl shared an emotional message about the band’s journey. “Over the years, we’ve had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak,” he wrote. “Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can’t go it alone.”

Grohl then extended his gratitude to several past members, acknowledging “the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese,” stating that without them, “this story would be incomplete.” He concluded this sentiment with a heartfelt, “Thank you, gentlemen.”

Grohl then saluted several former members of the group, as well as drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died suddenly in 2022. “It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music and memories that we shared with each of them over the years,” he wrote. “Thank you, gentlemen.”

Referencing Hawkins, Grohl said, “your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”

Forever Honoring Taylor Hawkins

The message also included a poignant tribute to the late drummer Taylor Hawkins, who passed away in 2022. Grohl emphasized Hawkins’ enduring presence, saying, “your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.”
