Man Shot by His Dog While Lying in Bed With His Girlfriend

Dog owners know how hard it is to say no when their furry friend wants to jump into bed at night. Those big, sweet puppy eyes can make anyone give in! But a surprising story from Tennessee might make you think twice before letting your dog snuggle up—or at least remind you to check your bed carefully.

In Memphis, a man named Jerald Kirkwood had an accident while lying in bed. His one-year-old pit bull, Oreo, jumped onto the bed and accidentally touched a loaded gun that was there. Oreo’s paw got caught in the gun’s trigger, and it fired, hitting Jerald in the leg. Luckily, the bullet only grazed him, and he wasn’t hurt too badly. He went to a hospital to get better.

Another person, a woman who was Jerald’s friend, was in the bed too but wasn’t hurt. After the gun went off, she picked it up and left the house quickly. No one knows why she left so fast, and there’s no update about her.

A news reporter visited Jerald’s house later and saw Oreo, who was still there and acting very friendly. Jerald was probably still at the hospital. The reporter didn’t say much else about what happened.

This story might make you wonder why a gun was in the bed in the first place. It’s not safe to keep a loaded gun where people or pets can bump into it, especially in a crowded bed with two people and a playful dog.

Accidents like this happen more often than you might think. In the United States, there are about 27,000 injuries from guns going off by mistake each year, and around 500 people don’t survive. Thankfully, Jerald’s injury wasn’t serious, and Oreo is still a happy, kind dog. This was just a strange accident, and it reminds everyone to be extra careful with things like guns around pets and people.
