Usually, when a dog runs away from home, people who rescue it want to keep it safe and return it to its owner. But for a dog named Saiga, his rescuers had a different plan—they wanted him to be free from his home forever.
Saiga had a tough life. For 15 years, he was tied up with a chain in a tiny space. His owner didn’t take good care of him. He didn’t get to run around or play, and no one showed him love. It was all he ever knew.
When Saiga got really sick, his owner took the chain off, probably thinking the old dog wouldn’t move. But Saiga surprised everyone—he ran away! He found a new spot to rest, far away from the mean owner and the awful place he called home.
One cold day, after being alone for a week, some kind people found Saiga. They could see he needed help right away. A rescuer named Olga took him to the vet to get better. She even posted a picture of him online. Guess what? Saiga’s owner saw the picture and called, asking for him back!
Olga and the other rescuers couldn’t let that happen. They knew Saiga had suffered too much with that owner. So, they decided to keep him and make sure his last days were happy ones.
When Olga found Saiga, he was 15 years old and very weak. He had lots of health problems and couldn’t even stand up. Some people might have given up on him, but Olga didn’t. She believed Saiga deserved to feel love and have fun, even for a little while. And she was right—he still had some strength left!
With lots of care and help, Saiga started to get better. First, he could stand up on his own. Then, his fur grew back where it had fallen out. Soon, he was walking all by himself! Olga kept him with her, and a whole year later, they’re both doing great.
