She Was Kicked Out Of The Library She Called Home — Now She Needs A New Family

After Pepper was found as a stray by employees at the Pioneer Memorial Library in Fredericksburg, Texas, the book-filled oasis became her new home. Visitors were delighted by the kitten’s presence and loved seeing her curled up by a book or roaming the stacks. It seemed too good to be true — and unfortunately, it was.

The county recently ruled that the 5-month-old kitten couldn’t stay in the library, devastating her many fans. Petitions were formed as people rallied behind Pepper. In the meantime, Pepper’s new temporary home is at Hill Country SPCA, and she’s hoping that one of her fans might find it in their heart to adopt her.

“Pepper came to us on Friday, 4/18 after being at the library for two months,” Andrew Davis, executive director of Hill Country SPCA, told The Dodo. “I’ve seen several posts about her having been at the library for ‘years,’ and if you were to meet her, I think you would see right away that her gentleness and overall presence makes you feel like you’ve known her for a long time. The legend of Pepper continues to grow, and in my opinion, it absolutely should!”

Everyone at the Hill Country SPCA was happy to take Pepper in, and now that she’s gotten settled, her adorable, spunky personality is on full display.

“Even though she’s only about 5 pounds, her personality is huge,” Davis said. “She has the most beautiful sass.”

She’s currently hanging out full time in the office at the shelter, getting along well with the other office cats and continuing to bring joy to everyone she meets.

Pepper loved living at the library, and visitors loved having her there. She’s a resilient little kitten, though, and she’ll happily take her spunk and sass into her next adventure with her. So many people fell in love with Pepper over the last couple of months, and hopefully one of them will be open to eventually adopting her.

“Pepper has captured our hearts just as she has so many others around our community,” Davis said. “She has so much love to give, and we are determined to help her find the kind of loving home that every pet deserves.”
