What started as an exciting spring break safari turned into a wild and unforgettable moment for a college student from Seattle named Britton Hayes.
While on a guided tour through the Serengeti with a group called Grand Ruaha Safari, Britton and his fellow travelers were lucky enough to spot three cheetah brothers in the wild. They were quietly watching the animals from inside their safari vehicle, hoping to keep a safe distance. But things took an unexpected turn.
One curious cheetah suddenly leapt onto the hood of the jeep. Everyone’s attention went straight to the front of the vehicle. But while they were all watching that cheetah, another one sneaked around the back and jumped into the jeep — landing right behind Britton.
“It was too late to drive away,” Britton told KOMO News. “You don’t want to scare the animals, because that’s when things can go wrong.”
At first, Britton wanted to panic. But thankfully, their experienced safari guide stayed calm and quickly gave instructions. He told Britton to stay still, breathe slowly, and avoid making eye contact with the animal. This would show the cheetah that the group wasn’t a threat.
Another tourist on the trip, Peter Heistein, captured the whole thing on video.
Britton did his best to stay calm, even though it was one of the scariest moments of his life. “I tried to clear my mind of all thoughts,” he said. “Predators can sense fear. I knew I had to stay calm to avoid a bad situation.”
After a few tense moments, the cheetah lost interest and quietly left the vehicle. Everyone let out a huge sigh of relief.
Britton admitted that he didn’t tell his mom — who happens to be a news anchor back home in Seattle — until he was safely home. “I knew she would’ve freaked out and made me come home early,” he said with a smile.
In the end, the group shared a laugh and were thankful to be safe. It was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that no one in that jeep will ever forget.
