The Man Behind Il Volo: How Michele Torpedine Believed in Three Young Voices From the Start

Long before sold-out concerts and international tours, the story of Il Volo began in a television studio in Italy.

In 2009, three teenagers—Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble—appeared separately on the Italian talent program Ti lascio una canzone. Each had a powerful voice well beyond his years. When the three eventually performed together, something unusual happened: their voices blended with a harmony that felt both classical and modern.

For viewers, it was a memorable television moment. For Michele Torpedine, it was the beginning of a much bigger vision.

Torpedine was already a respected music manager who had worked with internationally known artists like Andrea Bocelli and Zucchero. Years of experience had taught him how rare true vocal chemistry could be. Watching the three teenagers perform, he believed he had discovered something special.

While others saw three talented boys from different regions of Italy—Sicily, Bologna, and Abruzzo—Torpedine saw the possibility of a trio that could carry the tradition of Italian vocal music to a new generation.

He brought them together as a group, eventually giving them the name Il Volo, meaning “The Flight.” It was a fitting title for a project built on the idea that these young voices could soar far beyond the stage where they first met.

The journey, however, was far from easy.

The three singers were still teenagers when their careers began accelerating. Suddenly they were performing before huge audiences, recording albums, and traveling across continents. The excitement of success came with enormous pressure—especially for young performers learning to navigate life on the road while growing up in the public eye.

Tour schedules kept them away from home for long stretches. Interviews, rehearsals, and concerts filled their days. Like many young artists, they had to balance ambition with the emotional challenges of leaving familiar routines and family life behind.

Through it all, Torpedine remained a constant presence.

Those close to the group often describe him as more than a manager. He was the person guiding decisions, encouraging the singers when the pressure grew heavy, and helping them stay focused on the music that first brought them together.

Over time, Il Volo’s reputation grew around the world. Their style—sometimes described as operatic pop—blends classical technique with contemporary songs, creating performances that appeal to both traditional and modern audiences.

They began appearing on international stages, collaborating with major artists such as Barbra Streisand, and representing Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest. One of their most memorable appearances came in Panama City, where they performed for Pope Francis before a crowd of more than a million people during World Youth Day 2019.

Yet despite the global recognition, one detail has remained unchanged.

Backstage, away from the lights and applause, Michele Torpedine is often still there—watching quietly as the trio steps onto the stage.

For fans, the story behind Il Volo has become almost as meaningful as the music itself. It is a reminder that behind every performance lies years of dedication, belief, and guidance from people who rarely stand in the spotlight.

And more than fifteen years after three teenagers first sang together on television, the journey that began with one manager’s belief continues to unfold—one song at a time. 🎶
