The Voice’ Voting Rules Under Fire as Fans Demand the Return of a Beloved Feature

Season 30 has introduced new ways to vote, but the removal of the show’s longtime app has left some viewers frustrated and questioning whether the competition is as interactive as it used to be.

Fans of The Voice are entering Season 30 with plenty to talk about — and it isn’t just the performances. As the competition moves into its live-show stage, changes to the voting system and the disappearance of the show’s official app have sparked frustration among viewers who miss the interactive experience from previous seasons

The biggest point of controversy is the loss of the official The Voice app, which previously let fans do more than simply watch the show. Its features included playing virtual coach during Blind Auditions, building fantasy teams, taking part in polls and trivia, and accessing performances and other exclusive content. The app was discontinued ahead of Season 30, and the show has not publicly explained the reason for its removal in the reporting available.

Why are viewers unhappy with the new voting system?

The change is particularly noticeable now that audience voting is back. Instead of using the familiar app, eligible viewers can vote through text messages or TikTok comments. For some fans, those methods may be convenient, but they don’t replace all the interactive features that made the former app part of the viewing experience.

The reaction is about more than how a vote gets counted. The app gave viewers something to do throughout the competition — predicting which singers would advance, creating fantasy teams and engaging with the show between performances. Losing those features means the experience feels different, even though voting itself has returned.

Fans have voiced disappointment online, with some questioning why the app disappeared and others saying they miss being able to play along.

What are the new voting rules?

The new system gives viewers two ways to support contestants, but there are important restrictions.

  • Text voting: Eligible U.S. viewers can text a contestant’s name or official voting keyword to 22854 using a participating wireless carrier.

  • TikTok voting: Viewers can comment with a contestant’s name on the official voting post from @nbcthevoice. A public TikTok account is required.

  • Voting limits: The rules allow one vote per artist through each method, and votes must be submitted during the designated voting window.

  • Eligibility: Voters must be at least 18 and meet the show’s U.S. residency and other eligibility requirements.

The live shows are scheduled to begin November 9, with voting results revealed during the same episode.

Is the voting system actually unfair?

That’s the bigger question. The available reporting confirms that the app has been discontinued and that voting methods have changed, but it does not establish that the new system is unfair or that votes are being counted incorrectly.

Still, there are understandable concerns. TikTok voting requires a public account, while text voting depends on access to a participating U.S. wireless carrier. Those requirements may make participation less convenient for some viewers. The removal of the app also takes away features that let fans participate beyond casting votes.

The beloved feature fans want back

The feature at the centre of the backlash is the official The Voice app and its interactive experience. It wasn’t simply another way to vote: fans could act as virtual coaches during Blind Auditions, create fantasy teams, answer trivia and participate in polls. Those options are no longer available for Season 30.

That distinction matters because bringing back the app’s interactive features would not necessarily mean restoring app-based voting. The show could potentially bring back the games, polls and fantasy competitions separately — although NBC has not announced plans to do so.

Will NBC bring the app back?

For now, there is no confirmed announcement that the official app or its discontinued features will return. The change has left viewers adjusting to a different way of supporting their favourite artists just as the competition reaches its live stage.

With the live shows approaching, the real test will be whether fans embrace text and TikTok voting — or continue asking the show to restore the interactive features that made previous seasons more engaging.

What do you think? Should The Voice bring back its official app and let fans play along again, or are text messages and TikTok enough?
