A jaw-dropping 95 million people can’t stop replaying the night Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith went stick-for-stick in their now-legendary drum battle on The Tonight Show. What started as a playful showdown between two lookalike “twins” turned into a thundering clash of rhythm and personality, as the funnyman and the rock icon hammered the stage with pure energy. With every beat, the crowd roared louder, torn between laughter and awe, as both men fought to prove who really owned the throne of the drums. It wasn’t just music—it was comedy, chaos, and pure adrenaline rolled into one unforgettable battle that fans still can’t get enough of.

Smith ups the ante quickly with a hard-hitting groove and shows his ability to match Ferrell’s side-splitting taunts with his own jibes. The battle continues until Smith finally loses it and absolutely goes to town on a stadium-ready solo. The Red Hot Chili Peppers then hit the stage and cover “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” while Ferrell adds the most important part: the cowbell groove! Fallon then closes out the zany segment by declaring Ferrell the winner for his cowbell skills, and The Music Man can’t blame him!

Ferrell admits in the opening interview that all the drum parts were actually played by Smith beforehand, but the funnyman still does a pretty solid job miming to the beats. Fans couldn’t help but come back to this classic Tonight Show moment, and added comments such as “The first 10 seconds is when you’re actually trying to figure out who is Will and who is Chad” and “They are literally twins. It’s crazy. Looking at them, face on… it’s incredible.”

The drum battle isn’t the only time Smith has gone viral for his drum antics. The sticksman recently scored an 8.5 million view video when he dropped in to Drumeo to play Bring Me the Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart.” Smith went into the session without having heard the song previously and had to work out a drum arrangement on the fly. The video shows that he’s not only super entertaining, but also a monster player, because it takes some serious skill to deliver the goods without any prep like that.

If any The Music Man readers liked the Bring Me the Horizon video, you’re in luck, as Smith has recorded a total of 11 videos with Drumeo. Every single video was a hit on YouTube, with all racking up at least a million views, while the most popular hit 25 million views. The most popular video in the series is Smith’s cover of “The Kill,” which, like the Bring Me the Horizon video, he went in blind for. The next most popular video was Smith’s performance of Dua Lipa’s “Break My Heart.” This Drumeo clip was special for the funk rock legend as he was the original drummer on the studio recording for the song.
