  • Danielle Fishel says that she was “not experiencing enough joy in my life” after undergoing treatment for early-stage breast cancer
  • The Boy Meets World alum, 44, said that her cancer journey inspired her to join the cast of Dancing with the Stars season 34
  • The actress, who is paired with Pasha Pashkov, said joining the ABC show was the “fastest” she’s ever said “yes”

Danielle Fishel said she decided to join the cast of Dancing with the Stars season 34 after undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

”The minute I was done with my cancer treatment, I thought to myself, ‘If this has shown me anything, it has shown me that I am not experiencing enough joy in my life,’ ” the Boy Meets World alum, 44, told PEOPLE exclusively.

Fishel, who is paired with pro Pasha Pashkov for the ABC hit, continued, ”I’m going through every day, performing tasks and being there for my family and being there for work. Where’s the fun?”

“When they asked me to do this, I was like, ‘This is the perfect way to cap it off,’ “ she explained.

Fishel was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which she shared on her podcast, Pod Meets World, last August.

Treatment included a lumpectomy in August and a margin revision surgery in September, she told PEOPLE. Fishel shared that she initially considered a double mastectomy, but doctors said that because the disease was caught so early, a lumpectomy was the best route “to get back to my normal life as quickly as possible.”

“I was feeling healthy, I was looking healthy. But I went in for my mammogram and they said it looked suspicious and the results are abnormal,” she told PEOPLE about how her cancer was found. “I was not expecting in any way that it was going to find anything. It was really shocking.”

Fishel also underwent 20 rounds of radiation, explaining that it “hurt to be awake” after it left her with a “bad sunburn” and a rash.

After treatment, Fishel said her mantra was “saying yes to this year” — and as she tells PEOPLE, joining DWTS “was just the fastest” she’s ever said “yes.”

“PAUL MESCAL SAID ‘OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS, PEOPLE WILL GET A BREAK FROM ME’ — AND THEN CONFIRMED HE’LL BE PLAYING PAUL MCCARTNEY.” It sounded like a disappearance… but it was really the first step into the role everyone’s watching: The Beatles. The headline isn’t just the casting. It’s what Mescal teased next: he’ll be doing his own singing in the film. And he’s already met McCartney several times in real life—receiving “great kindness and warmth” from the very person he’s about to portray. On one side, he wants to fade from the endless promo spotlight. On the other, the McCartney role will only make that spotlight brighter than ever. And Mescal sums it up in one quiet, loaded line: “a peek behind the curtain.” But what, exactly, is that curtain hiding?

“WHEN TOBY KEITH MET THE CAMERA… AND TIME SEEMED TO PAUSE.” During Toby Keith’s performance of “Don’t Let the Old Man In” at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards, there was a fleeting moment that felt startlingly real. Just before the second verse, he slowly raised his gaze and locked eyes with the main camera. No drama. No theatrics. Just a quiet, steady look that cut straight through the screen. It didn’t feel staged—it felt personal, like a message meant for one person at a time. Later, someone from the production team admitted the shot wasn’t planned at all. “He was already there,” they said. “We just followed him.” Almost instantly, viewers echoed the same reaction online: “It felt like he was looking right at me.” His eyes told a story—strong yet weary, honest without asking for sympathy. Afterward, backstage, he sat in silence, breathing slowly, as if a long-held truth had finally been released. That’s why it spread everywhere.Because it wasn’t a performance. It was a moment of truth.
