Before her passing, Bette Midler left Hollywood in tears after revealing her final, heart-to-heart conversation with her longtime friend Diane Keaton — and the promise she kept until the very end.

In an interview recorded just months before her death, Midler recalled, “Diane called me one evening, just to say she was ready for whatever comes next. I asked if there was anything she wanted me to do, and she laughed — that same warm laugh — and said, ‘If I go first, promise me you’ll sing something happy for me. Don’t cry, just sing.’” That phone call became the last memory between two women whose friendship had spanned more than four decades.

True to her word, Midler spent her final afternoon in the recording studio, where she recorded You’ve Got a Friend — the song they used to sing backstage during The First Wives Club (1996). At the end of the track, she softly whispered, “This one’s for you, Di.” The recording was played at a private memorial following Midler’s death, moving everyone in attendance to tears. One close friend shared, “Bette always believed Diane was waiting somewhere. When that song played, it felt like they had finally found each other again — no distance, no tears, just laughter.”
