Celtic Thunder Honors George Donaldson With a Powerful Performance That Celebrated His Life

Damian McGinty and Keith Harkin

When Celtic Thunder took the stage to perform “Life With You” during Legacy Vol II, the night opened not with applause, but with a quiet message that instantly stilled the room: “This is for you, George.”

Before a single note was sung, the group shared a heartfelt introduction honoring their late bandmate George Donaldson. Archival footage of Donaldson appeared on screen as the tribute began at the very first second of the video.

“George was a giant of a man, in every sense of the word,” the message said. “His love for his family, his friends, his fans, and his music was legendary. He was the heart and soul of Celtic Thunder, and his passing has left a void that can never be filled. But tonight, we celebrate his life, his music, and the incredible legacy he left behind. This is for you, George.”

It was not a tearful farewell. There were no dramatic pauses or emotional breakdowns. Instead, the group chose something far more powerful: they performed the song exactly as it was meant to be sung.

“Life With You,” long associated with Donaldson’s warm vocals, is a romantic ballad about devotion and lifelong companionship. Its lyrics speak of transformation — from a man content in solitude to someone who cannot imagine life without the one he loves. Lines like “I want to spend my life with you / Don’t want to live all alone” now carry even deeper meaning, echoing through the theater with quiet strength.

Rather than turning the performance into a moment of sorrow, Celtic Thunder brought the audience back to who George Donaldson was on stage — strong, kind, and full of life. The arrangement remained faithful to the original spirit of the song, allowing his legacy to shine through the music itself.

As the final refrain of “Without you in our home” filled the venue, it was clear the tribute was not about loss. It was about remembrance. Through Legacy Vol II and this moving performance of “Life With You,” Celtic Thunder ensured that George Donaldson’s voice, presence, and heart remain exactly where they belong at the center of the music.

It wasn’t a performance. It wasn’t a moment designed to go viral. Last night, James McCartney stepped onto the stage and sang “Wish You Were Here” — not for the room, but for one person quietly seated in the audience: his father, Paul McCartney. No legend. No Beatle. Just a father listening as his son said thank you in the only language they’ve ever truly shared — music. The silence said everything. This wasn’t a cover… it was love, legacy, and a moment too honest to fake.
