James Corden has often called his Carpool Karaoke episode with Paul McCartney his all-time favorite. However, in a recent conversation at the Paley Center for Media, Corden revealed just how challenging it was to keep McCartney on board for the segment. He described the process as “thrilling,” but also filled with hurdles.

Although McCartney was already familiar with the concept of the show, the two weren’t strangers, making it easier to pitch. Initially, McCartney was excited, telling Corden, “I’m in, I’ll do it, I can’t wait.” But things quickly took an unexpected turn when, just a month later, McCartney pulled back, saying he had cold feet. Corden recalled receiving a message stating, “He’d canceled, he didn’t want to do it.”

The drama didn’t end there. Days before their planned trip to Liverpool, Corden got another email from McCartney’s team, stating that once again, he was backing out, citing that it wasn’t the right moment for him.

Despite the setbacks, McCartney eventually agreed to go through with the segment, and it went on to become one of the most iconic episodes in Carpool Karaoke history. Corden elaborated on the unforgettable experience in the rest of his interview.

“Ringo said it straight: we didn’t always get along… but there was one guy who never let The Beatles get ‘lazy.’” In an interview, Ringo Starr shared a lesser-talked-about key to The Beatles’ success: Paul McCartney was the band’s workaholic. No matter how heated the arguments got, once the count-in started, all four of them gave it everything — and it was Paul who would always call, “Alright lads,” pulling everyone back into the studio to cut more records, write more songs, and make more history. Ringo even said they still thank Paul to this day for everything he did.

“IN 1976, THEY SANG ‘GOLDEN RING.’ IN 1998, HALF OF IT WENT SILENT.” George Jones once said “Golden Ring” lost half its soul when Tammy Wynette died in 1998. He sang it anyway. Slower. Quieter. Like a man talking to memory. Then, in Nashville, Georgette Jones walked into the light wearing her mother’s shimmering dress. When she lifted the chorus, the room went still. The tilt of her head. The last trembling note. It felt like Tammy stepping back into the song. George’s eyes stayed on her. He almost missed his line. Backstage, he didn’t hug her. He slipped off a worn silver ring and placed it in her palm—the pawnshop promise from the beginning. Love, somehow, still gold.

The Lennon Sisters stood side by side beneath the soft glow of the stage lights — four familiar voices that had grown up with America. The song began the way it always had. Gentle. Harmonies woven from years of trust and memory. Then it happened. Near the final lines, one voice trembled. Not from age — from remembering too much. A sister glanced over. Another reached for her hand. The harmony broke for just a breath. Silence. And then the audience filled it. Not loudly. Not perfectly. But together. Hundreds of voices rose to finish the song — people who had danced to it, cried to it, grown older with it. The Sisters didn’t sing. They listened. Smiling through tears. For the first time, they weren’t carrying the harmony. It was carrying them.
