THE LAST MESSAGE SHE NEVER READ

The night Ava disappeared, the rain drowned the city like a warning.
Streetlights flickered. Storm drains overflowed.
Something was wrong — Ethan felt it in his bones.

They were childhood best friends turned lovers, two broken halves that fit too perfectly.
But love hurt them more than life ever did.

Two weeks before she vanished, they ended things — not out of lack of love, but because sometimes loving someone feels like holding a rose too tight. Beautiful. Painful. Inevitable.

Ethan still texted her every night.

Please come back.

No reply ever came.

But he felt her silence like gravity.

And gravity never lies.

CHAPTER 2 — THE MESSAGE NEVER SENT

Three days passed before anyone noticed Ava missing.
Police shrugged. Friends assumed she needed space.
But Ethan knew — Ava didn’t run, she vanished.

He entered her apartment with her spare key.
His breath caught:

  • Lights still on
  • Jacket hanging
  • Food in the fridge, untouched
  • Sketchbook open on her desk
  • Phone left behind

No woman running away leaves her phone.

He unlocked the screen — no passcode, she trusted him even when they were broken.

There it was:

Draft SMS: “Ethan, if you see this… I need you to—”

The sentence ended like a heartbeat cut short.

He stared at it for a long time, pulse racing.
Something interrupted her mid-typing.

Something — or someone.

CHAPTER 3 — THE HIDDEN NOTE

Detectives glanced around. Routine. Report. File.
To them, she was just another missing girl.

But love makes ordinary men dangerous.

Ethan tore through drawers, books, closet floors — searching.
Something caught his eye: a crack in Ava’s mirror — fresh, sharp.

He pulled it off the wall.

Taped behind it:

A single note.

HE KNOWS ABOUT US.

His heart caved inward.

Her father.

A man with wealth, power, and a darkness behind his eyes.
He always said Ethan was “beneath her.”
He always warned Ava she’d regret choosing love over blood.

But he lived in another city.
Or so everyone believed.

CHAPTER 4 — WHO IS WATCHING?

At 2:14 AM — their old call time — Ethan’s phone rang.

Blocked number.
He answered shakily.

A voice, distorted like metal scraping metal:

“Stop looking for her, Ethan.”
“You won’t survive the truth.”

The line went dead.

Cold dread crawled down his spine.
Someone knew he was investigating.
Someone was watching.

He opened the curtains slowly.

Across the street, a black car idled.
Engine running. No movement.

He was being hunted.

But love outlives fear.

And he would burn the world to find Ava.

CHAPTER 5 — THE FATHER’S HOUSE

Ethan traveled to her father’s estate — a cold mansion with manicured gardens and security cameras humming like insects.

Her father greeted him with a smile too polished to trust.

“Still hung up on Ava?”
“Some women simply… disappear.”

Ethan’s fists tightened.
Blood roared in his ears.

“Where is she?”

The man only smirked.

“Careful. Curiosity kills more than cats.”

A guard escorted Ethan out.

But as the gate closed, he glimpsed something —

— a curtain in the top window
— small fingers gripping it
— a bracelet he gave Ava last winter

She was inside.

Alive.

CHAPTER 6 — THE RESCUE

He returned at night.
Storm clouds again — the sky remembered.

He climbed the fence, crawled through hedges, heart hammering like a war drum.

Inside, corridors smelled like dust and forgotten screams.
He followed faint sounds — breathing, crying, something raw.

Ava.

Locked in a room like a secret.

She was pale, thin, eyes red from sleepless nights — but alive.
When she saw him, she broke.

“Ethan… I knew you’d come.”
“My father wouldn’t let me leave. He said you were ruining me.”

She fell into his arms — love and pain in the same heartbeat.

But footsteps echoed behind them.

Her father appeared, gun in hand.

“You should have listened to the warning.”

Ethan shielded Ava with his body.

For love. For regret. For everything unsaid.

CHAPTER 7 — THE TRUTH THAT DESTROYS

Her father aimed.

A shot fired.

Ava screamed.

But not Ethan.

Her father dropped the gun — eyes wide —
as blood bloomed across his own shirt.

Behind him stood Ava’s younger brother — trembling, gun shaking in his small hands.

“I’m sorry,” he sobbed,
“but I wouldn’t lose her again.”

The mansion fell silent.

Ava collapsed into Ethan’s arms, crying, broken but free.

Together they ran — down the hall, out into the storm, leaving wealth, blood, and ghosts behind.

For the first time in weeks, Ava felt air that didn’t taste like prison.

CHAPTER 8 — THE ENDING THAT HURTS

They escaped the city.
New names. New apartment.
Healing slowly, painfully.

But trauma leaves fingerprints.

Some nights she wakes screaming.
Some days Ethan watches her, wondering how love survived hell.

Yet every morning she whispers:

“I’m here because you didn’t stop loving me.”

He saved her.

But the truth?

She saved him too —
from a lifetime of wondering what if.

ENDING NOTE

Love didn’t come easy.
It came scarred, bruised, and half-alive —
but it came back.

And sometimes, that’s enough.

Sometimes love survives because two hearts refuse to let go —
even when the world tries to tear them apart.
