Bruce Springsteen performs his Oscar-winning song “Streets of Philadelphia” live at the Academy Museum Gala.

Honored at the Academy Museum Gala

Bruce Springsteen made a special appearance at the Academy Museum Gala on October 18, where he performed a rare live version of one of his most emotional songs, “Streets of Philadelphia.” The event honored him with the inaugural Legacy Award, celebrating “an artist whose body of work has inspired generations of storytellers and deeply influenced our culture.”

To mark the occasion, Springsteen performed three songs — “Atlantic City” from his Nebraska album, “Land of Hope and Dreams” from the E Street Band catalog, and his Oscar-winning track “Streets of Philadelphia.” The audience witnessed a reflective and heartfelt set that paid tribute to his long career and cultural influence.

The Song’s Meaning and Legacy

“Streets of Philadelphia” was originally written for the 1993 film Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks, which explored the social and emotional impact of the AIDS crisis. Released in February 1994, the song earned Springsteen the Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year.

Describing the song’s haunting appeal, Far Out once wrote, “The song starts with a simple drumbeat, one stretched out and bouncy, before a warm synth comes in and helps us ease into the track as we slip into dreams. His vocals are as fragile and filled with meaning as ever as he sings, ‘I was bruised and battered / I couldn’t tell what I felt / I was unrecognisable to myself.’” The article called “Streets of Philadelphia” “one of his most moving numbers,” noting how it “came about purely by accident.”

A Biopic on the Horizon

Springsteen’s story will soon reach the big screen in Deliver Me From Nowhere, with Jeremy Allen White portraying the New Jersey musician. The film follows Springsteen as he faces the pressures of success while recording his 1982 album Nebraska.

During a recent conversation with White at Spotify’s London headquarters, Springsteen described the upcoming film as a “miracle.” The biopic is set to premiere on October 24.
