In 2016, something magical happened at San Francisco’s Fillmore Theatre — a constellation of rock and soul icons gathered to raise both voices and funds, performing a soul-stirring version of “Piece of My Heart.” The show was part of Acoustic-4-A-Cure, the benefit concert founded by Sammy Hagar and James Hetfield to support pediatric brain tumor research at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.

What made this particular performance so special was the unexpected mix of artists — far removed from their usual genres — taking on a classic originally penned for Erma Franklin (and famously performed by Janis Joplin). Among them: Hagar, Hetfield, John Mayer, Melissa Etheridge, Joe Satriani, Pat Monahan, Tommy Lee, Kris Kristofferson, and more.

Hagar and Hetfield launched Acoustic-4-A-Cure in 2014 to support pediatric brain tumor research. Their synergy across genres reflected a shared vision: using their platform to bring awareness and funds to an important medical cause.

Over the years, the concert grew to include a broad roster of guest artists — crossing styles from rock, metal, blues, and folk.

This performance was filmed and featured in Sammy Hagar’s AXS TV series, Rock & Roll Road Trip. In one of the episodes, Hagar brings together his friends and collaborators at that Fillmore show, resulting in surprising pairings and jam sessions.

That night at the Fillmore, we didn’t just witness a cover. We saw a rare convergence of legends lifting each other up, lending their voices and styles to a song that transcends genre. Whether you’re a fan of Mayer’s lyrical guitar lines, Hetfield’s rock gravitas, Hagar’s energetic presence, or Etheridge’s soulful tone — this performance offers something unforgettable for each listener.

Stevie Nicks turned her concert into a moment no one will ever forget. Under soft lights and a sea of phone screens, she began to sing “Free Fallin’,” her voice trembling with emotion. The crowd fell silent. As her raspy tone filled the air, images of Tom Petty flickered on the giant screen behind her—laughing, playing, living the music they once shared. It wasn’t just a performance; it felt like a conversation between old friends across time. Fans wiped their eyes, some whispering the lyrics through tears. “You could feel him there with her,” one fan said, their voice cracking. Another added, “It was like Tom and Stevie were sharing the stage one more time.” By the final note, the entire arena was standing, not just for Nicks—but for the memory of a legend she’ll never stop singing to.

When Anika Nilles stepped onto the stage at the Meinl Drum Festival in 2015, the expectation was a technical showcase, but as “Solution”—written by Kaz Rodriguez—began, it became clear she was aiming for something more musical, allowing the groove to settle before gradually building tension, shaping each rhythmic idea with clarity and intention, keeping her movements relaxed while the sound stayed full and controlled, letting patterns return and evolve instead of colliding, using dynamics and space to give the performance a clear arc, avoiding speed for its own sake in favor of feel and balance, and ultimately turning what could have been a drum solo into a complete musical statement that viewers still revisit years later not to be overwhelmed, but to understand.

“AFTER 50 YEARS IN MUSIC, STEVE PERRY SAID ONE SENTENCE THAT FROZE THE ROOM.” It was supposed to be gentle feedback on The Voice. But when Steve Perry leaned forward, the room changed. “You have the range,” he said quietly. “But I don’t feel it.” The air tightened. The kid pushed back. Numbers. Notes. Viral pride. People shifted in their seats. Then Steve stood up. No mic check. No track. Just closed eyes and breath. That voice — the one that carried Don’t Stop Believin’ — filled the silence. No tricks. Just ache. And suddenly, everyone remembered. Anyone can hit notes. Only a legend makes you feel them.
