Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman have given “Cherry, Cherry” new life.

In a behind-the-scenes clip debuting exclusively with PEOPLE, Hudson, 46, and Jackman, 57, hit the recording studio to record the hit song by Neil Diamond for their upcoming film Song Sung Blue.

In the clip, Hudson (who plays Claire Sardina) and Jackman (who plays Mike Sardina) appear as their characters in the film — and then as themselves in the studio.

At one point, Hudson asks Jackman if they could re-do the “baby loves me” portion of the song and he agrees to it. Then, the pair appears to be having fun as they trade lines in the song.

At the end, they smile and give each other a high-five.

The official soundtrack for Song Sung Blue, which features all of the cast vocal versions of the songs from the film, dropped on Friday, Dec. 19. The soundtrack includes 16 songs total.

Scott Bomar, who served as the executive producer on the soundtrack and also wrote the film’s score, said they had “a lot of fun” recording the music.

“‘Cherry, Cherry’ was the first song I adapted for Craig Brewer for Song Sung Blue. Neil really captured the perfect two-minute, 40-second pop song when he wrote ‘Cherry, Cherry,’” he said in a statement. “I immediately heard Kate sing the background vocal part from Neil’s original version. This is the only song on the soundtrack which we added some additional instruments to for the soundtrack version.”

He continued. “Craig Brewer, mix engineer, Mike Piersante and I all collectively felt it needed to be a little bigger than the more intimate version in the film. Drummer Terence F. Clark and I went into the historic Sam Phillips Recording in Memphis where we had just recorded the film’s score and had a lot of fun filling out the sound.”

Song Sung Blue, which is set for release on Christmas Day, follows the real-life Milwaukee-area couple who formed the band Lightning & Thunder in tribute to “Sweet Caroline” singer Diamond. Written and directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow), Song Sung Blue is based on the 2008 documentary of the same name by Greg Kohs.

“Based on a true story, two down-on-their-luck musicians form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams,” reads a synopsis for the film.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the Gotham Awards in New York City earlier this month, the actors opened up about the one thing they learned from working with each other in the film.

“Hugh, his superpower is to connect,” Hudson told PEOPLE. “Whether it’s on stage, whether it’s on set, whether it’s with anyone and everyone — he just wants to connect and he wants to make sure that everyone’s happy. I learned that one of the great gifts you can give people is that you actually have a desire to connect to them.”

Jackson added of Hudson, “I learned a lot from Kate. I learned about acting on film, actually. I’ve done almost 50 films, but, somehow, working with Kate — it’s a very difficult thing to describe but the mixture of being prepared and just being instinctive is a really fine line and no one does it better than Kate Hudson.”
