When a powerhouse lineup of musicians took the stage at Farm Aid 2024, the crowd had no idea they were about to witness magic. Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Lukas and Micah Nelson joined forces to cover The Band’s timeless country-rock anthem “The Weight”—and what unfolded was nothing short of breathtaking.

When a star-studded group of musicians performed The Band’s country-rock classic ‘The Weight’ at Farm Aid 2024, it resulted in one of the best covers of the song that has ever been committed to video! The lineup of musicians included Dave Matthews, Tim Reynolds, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Lukas and Micah Nelson, and fans can’t get over what a brilliant band they make.

With four guitars onstage and plenty of harmonies too, the rendition was truly a dream for country-rock fans, many of whom have taken to the YouTube comment section to show their appreciation for the cover. Even die-hard fans of The Band have fallen in love with this version, and as such, it’s little surprise that well over a million people have listened to it in the space of a few weeks.

If there are any Music Man readers out there who are unfamiliar with the artists involved in the cover, meanwhile, allow us to enlighten you. Dave Matthews is the iconic singer of his eponymous band, while Tim Reynolds is his lead guitarist. Nathaniel Rateliff is a folk and Americana singer-songwriter who has had numerous US hit albums, while Lukas and Micah Nelson are the sons of iconic 1960s country singer Willie Nelson.

And if you’re a fan of this star-studded performance – or indeed any of the artists who took part in it – we’re pretty sure that you’ll also love The Band’s original version of the track too (that’s if you haven’t heard it already, of course!). This track is one of my personal favorites, and the video of The Band performing it – taken from the documentary about the group directed by Martin Scorsese – perfectly showcases its vocal melodies and rootsy country feel.

If any Music Man readers out there were lucky enough to attend Farm Aid 2024 and see Dave Matthews and friends cover The Band’s ‘The Weight’ in person, then I have to admit I’m incredibly jealous! It really is one of the few covers out there that does justice to the magnificent original, and it’s a relief to know it’s up on YouTube so we can watch it again whenever we want.

These musical virtuosos have truly honored The Band with their unforgettable rendition of ‘The Weight’ at Farm Aid 2024, creating a version that resonates deeply with country-rock enthusiasts. This exceptional gathering of talents has undeniably captured hearts worldwide. To explore more about these incredible artists and their work, check out the links below.

Was it a rooftop love letter or a lonely cry into the open sky? That April afternoon in London didn’t feel real. The air hung still, almost holding its breath, while the soft strum of guitars and Lennon’s raw, aching voice floated above the city. Sunlight flashed off chimney tops, stretching long shadows across the roofs, and yet the world below kept moving, unaware of the magic happening overhead. Up there on the Apple Records rooftop, time didn’t just slow—it paused. It felt like the sky itself leaned in to listen as John Lennon poured out “Don’t Let Me Down,” his unfiltered plea of love to Yoko Ono.

I showed up ready to watch Willie Nelson, but by the end I was hitting replay for Red Clay Strays—because that’s how powerful this performance was. When Willie Nelson and the Red Clay Strays came together for “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and “I’ll Fly Away,” it didn’t just move the crowd—it shook them. As someone who’s been an “old country” fan my whole life, I’m used to rolling my eyes at all the noise that passes for country these days. But Red Clay Strays? They’re different. They’re real. They’re the kind of sound that grabs your chest and doesn’t let go. After this performance, they’re officially my favorite band—no hesitation, no debate. They hit a level most modern country can’t even touch.
