Darius Rucker Surprises Fans With an Upbeat Dolly Parton Classic at CMA Tribute

While Dolly Parton’s greatest ballads took center stage during Nashville’s star-studded tribute, Darius Rucker brought a different kind of energy to the celebration. His lively rendition of “Two Doors Down” offered a joyful reminder that Dolly’s musical legacy extends far beyond emotional love songs.

The performance took place on Wednesday, October 21, during CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, which aired on ABC. The special brought together some of country music’s biggest names to honor Parton’s extraordinary career and lasting influence. The program is also available to stream on Hulu.

Among the artists participating in the tribute were Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, Lady A, Little Big Town, Brad Paisley, Ella Langley and Rucker.

Rather than choosing one of Parton’s best-known emotional ballads, Rucker opted for the upbeat classic “Two Doors Down.”

Parton originally released the song in 1977 on her album Here You Come Again before re-recording it as a pop-disco single in 1978. Its infectious rhythm and cheerful spirit made it a fitting choice for one of the evening’s liveliest performances.

Before Rucker took the stage, Little Big Town members Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman introduced the song and shared the amusing story behind its creation.

The inspiration came from a time when Parton was on a diet. While staying in a motel, she could smell the fried clams her bandmates were enjoying in a room just two doors away. Unable to join them because of her diet, Parton turned the experience into a song that would become a fan favorite.

The story added another layer of humor to the performance, highlighting the playful personality behind Parton’s songwriting.

The Audience Joins in the Celebration

As soon as Rucker launched into “Two Doors Down,” the audience began clapping along to the beat.

Accompanied by a full band, backup singers, electric guitarists and a brass section, he moved energetically around the stage, bringing an upbeat atmosphere to the tribute. His performance provided a welcome contrast to the more sentimental moments of the evening, including renditions of “I Will Always Love You” and “He’s Alive.”

The song choice also demonstrated the range of Parton’s catalog, which spans heartfelt ballads, country classics and spirited pop-influenced hits.

Although Rucker and Parton have never officially performed a song together in a traditional duet, the two artists were both part of the star-studded 2016 musical project “Forever Country.”

Created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Country Music Association Awards, the project brought together numerous country stars in a collaborative recording. Rucker appeared alongside Martina McBride for a brief rendition of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” while Parton delivered the closing vocals on “I Will Always Love You.”

Reflecting on the experience in a 2017 interview, Rucker described being invited to participate as an extraordinary honor. He recalled feeling deeply moved when the video was released and seeing himself featured alongside some of country music’s most celebrated artists.

He specifically remembered sharing the screen with Little Big Town, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson and Parton, describing the opportunity to be part of such a major collaboration as amazing.
