For most artists, receiving a positive COVID-19 test result just hours before a major performance would mean only one thing: cancellation.

But for Gianluca Ginoble and the members of Il Volo, Eurovision 2022 became a story not of cancellation, but of determination, creativity, and the power of music to overcome unexpected obstacles.

On May 12, 2022, the Eurovision Song Contest returned to Italy, with the second semifinal taking place at the PalaOlimpico in Turin. For Il Volo, the event carried special meaning. Seven years earlier, the trio had represented Italy at Eurovision 2015 with “Grande Amore,” a performance that earned them third place overall while winning the televote with an impressive 292 points. Their return to the Eurovision stage was highly anticipated by fans who still remembered that iconic performance.

Everything appeared to be ready for another memorable appearance. Then came the news no one expected.

Shortly after arriving in Turin, Gianluca tested positive for COVID-19. Following health regulations, he was required to leave the venue immediately and begin isolation at home. Suddenly, a performance planned for three voices faced the possibility of becoming a performance of only two.

For the first time in Il Volo’s career, Piero Barone and Ignazio Boschetto would have to step onto a major international stage without Gianluca physically standing beside them.

Yet neither the group nor the Eurovision production team wanted to abandon the performance.

Instead, they found an innovative solution that allowed all three members to participate. While Piero and Ignazio performed live at the arena, Gianluca joined remotely from home. His image was projected onto the massive LED screens behind his bandmates, allowing audiences to see him throughout the performance. More importantly, his voice remained an integral part of the song.

As host Alessandro Cattelan introduced the act, viewers learned that although Gianluca could not be present in person, he would still be performing alongside the group from home.

The trio then delivered a special version of “Grande Amore,” blending Italian and English lyrics. It was an unusual sight: two singers standing under the bright Eurovision lights while a third appeared through technology hundreds of miles away. Yet as the performance unfolded, the separation seemed to disappear.

Fans watching in the arena and at home focused on what mattered most—the music.

The emotional connection between the three members remained intact, and the performance became one of the most memorable guest appearances of the event. Rather than feeling incomplete, it demonstrated the strength of the bond that has defined Il Volo since the beginning of their career.

When the final notes echoed through the PalaOlimpico, the audience rose to its feet. The standing ovation was about more than a song. It was a recognition of resilience, professionalism, and the determination to keep going despite difficult circumstances.

Years later, Eurovision fans still remember that performance. It serves as a reminder that great music is not limited by distance, unexpected setbacks, or physical separation. On that night in Turin, three voices came together against the odds—and proved that some performances are memorable not only because of how they sound, but because of the story behind them.
