Why Il Volo Chose a Gladiator Classic Instead of a Hit Song on the TODAY Show

When artists appear on national television, the formula is usually predictable. Perform a well-known hit, promote an upcoming tour, and leave viewers wanting more.

But when Il Volo stepped onto the TODAY Show stage in New York on April 9, 2026, they chose a different path.

Instead of performing one of the songs that helped build their international success, the trio selected “Nelle tue mani,” their Italian adaptation of “Now We Are Free,” the unforgettable theme associated with the film Gladiator. It was a bold choice for a morning television audience, but one that perfectly reflected the group’s artistic identity.

Standing together in Studio 1A, Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto, and Gianluca Ginoble relied on the same element that has defined their career from the beginning: their voices. There were no elaborate production effects or dramatic visual elements competing for attention. The focus remained entirely on the music.

For longtime fans, the selection made perfect sense. Throughout their career, Il Volo has built a reputation for blending classical influences with contemporary appeal, introducing traditional and cinematic works to audiences that might not otherwise encounter them. Rather than adapting themselves to trends, they have often invited listeners into their own musical world.

The timing of the performance made the choice even more interesting.

The group had recently announced an 18-date North American tour, including a performance at the world-famous Madison Square Garden. Many artists in a similar position might have used the opportunity to showcase a radio-friendly favorite or one of their most commercially successful songs.

Instead, Il Volo presented a piece rooted in film history.

Originally associated with the Academy Award-winning soundtrack of Gladiator, the composition has remained beloved by audiences for decades. By transforming it into “Nelle tue mani,” the trio offered something familiar yet entirely different, preserving the emotional power of the original while giving it a distinctly Italian identity.

The version performed on the TODAY Show originated from their album Live at the Valley of the Temples. The recording itself carries a remarkable story. Captured at the Temple of Concordia in Sicily, one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples in the world, the performance connected modern music with a setting that has stood for more than 2,000 years.

That combination of history, culture, and music is central to Il Volo’s appeal.

For more than 17 years, the three singers have resisted the pressure to follow the easiest route. While many performers focus on what is most commercially predictable, Il Volo has repeatedly chosen projects that challenge both themselves and their audiences. Their catalog moves comfortably between opera, classical crossover, traditional Italian music, film themes, and contemporary songs.

The TODAY Show performance was another example of that philosophy in action.

Viewers tuning in for their morning coffee may have expected a promotional appearance connected to the group’s upcoming tour. What they received instead was a reminder of music’s ability to travel across languages, generations, and artistic genres.

A soundtrack first heard in cinemas decades ago found new expression through three Italian voices standing on a New York stage. For a few minutes, the distance between ancient Sicily, Hollywood cinema, and modern Manhattan seemed to disappear.

That is what made the performance memorable. It was not simply a television appearance or a tour promotion. It was a demonstration of why Il Volo continues to stand apart: even after nearly two decades together, they remain committed to choosing music that means something, regardless of whether it is the easiest choice.

And for many viewers watching that morning, that decision made all the difference.
